The Selection: Cara Nova (Trap 3)
Our Dog of the Day is the exciting young bitch, Cara Nova.
Trained by M.A. Thomas, this May ’24 whelp is the youngest runner in the field, and her trajectory is firmly on the up. She arrives here fresh off a brilliant victory on February 8th, where she clocked a calculated time of 16.40. That run was a significant step forward, showing good middle pace to hit the front and win going away.
In D4 company, a 16.40 run is a serious standard. While she faces experienced rivals today, her scope for improvement is massive compared to the more exposed runners around her. Drawn in Trap 3, if she can reproduce that break and middle pace, she should have too much firepower for this field.
The Dangers: Who Can Challenge?
The main danger appears to be Crokers Mate (Trap 2). A model of consistency, he rarely runs a bad race. He won well on February 1st (16.48 calculated) and followed that up with a solid D3 effort. He is dropping back slightly in class context and will be looking to capitalize if our selection misses the break.
Faradays Larry (Trap 6) is another last-start winner who cannot be ignored. He took advantage of the wide draw on February 11th to win in 16.56. While he is slightly slower on the clock than Cara Nova’s best, his confidence will be high, and he is likely to get a clear run on the outside.
Da Gruffalo (Trap 5) is the wildcard. He has been contesting higher D3 grades recently without much luck, but he holds a personal best of 16.27 from January. If the drop in class sparks a revival, he is the fastest dog in the race on paper, though his recent form leaves questions to be answered.
Race Verdict
This looks like a perfect opportunity for Cara Nova to notch back-to-back wins. She is young, improving, and holds the fastest recent winning time in the field. We expect her to lead around the bend and hold off the consistent challenge of Crokers Mate.

We are delighted to report that our Dog of the Day selection, Cara Nova, landed the spoils at The Valley yesterday!
Justifying our confidence, the M.A. Thomas-trained youngster put in a dominant performance. Breaking sharply from Trap 3, she was “Always Led” (ALed) throughout the 260m dash, stopping the clock in a blistering 16.24s. She crossed the line a massive 5 lengths clear of the field, proving she is a greyhound with a bright future.

Not only did our main selection win at 13/8, but our analysis of the dangers was spot on. We identified Crokers Mate (Trap 2) as the main threat to chase her home, and he finished 2nd.
