Dog of the Day Newcastle
Welcome back to dograces.co.uk for today’s premium greyhound analysis. This afternoon, our attention turns to the North East for the 15:32 at Newcastle, a competitive 480m Handicap (HP) event.
Newcastle offers a very fair test of a greyhound’s ability. While the bends can take some getting used to, the track is renowned for its long home straight. This unique layout means slow-starting, late-running types are far less disadvantaged here than at tighter circuits.
With that track profile in mind, let’s dive into today’s standout selection.
The Selection: Wanted Bocko (Trap 5 – R3)
Our Dog of the Day is Wanted Bocko, breaking from Trap 5 with a 3-meter handicap.
This January ’24 son of Lenson Bocko has been putting together a highly impressive string of performances lately, boasting form figures of 54112. Winning two of his last three starts and narrowly missing out on a hat-trick last time, he arrives in peak condition.
Trained by S Roberts, who is currently operating at a sharp 22.5% strike rate, Wanted Bocko looks ideally placed here. Running off R3, he has just enough of an advantage over the scratch runner to dictate his own race, while possessing the finishing kick required down Newcastle’s long straight to reel in the front markers. He is a deserving favorite and our confident pick to cross the line in front.
Assessing the Rest of the Field
In a handicap race, traffic and timing are everything. Here is how the rest of the runners shape up against our selection:
Trap 4: Easy Oz (R6) – The main danger and a kennelmate to our selection. The clock suggests he is exceptionally well-handicapped here, and his recent form (44431) shows he is trending in the right direction. He will be applying the pressure midway through the race.
Trap 6: Bramble Emerald (Scr) – Do not let the scratch handicap fool you. With a staggering 20 wins from 61 starts, this bitch is a prolific winner. Trainer C L Hardy boasts a massive 36.36% strike rate right now. While the analyst believes she is an unlikely winner today, her sheer class makes her dangerous.
Trap 3: Wirtz Class (R11) – Arrives on the back of a recent victory, but his overall form (3 wins from 18) leaves a bit to be desired in this company. He will need a career-best to hold off the back markers.
Trap 2: Smiling Evamac (R13) – Starting with a sizable advantage, but she is still seeking her first career win after seven attempts (0/7). She may struggle to maintain the gallop when the heavy hitters arrive on the scene.
Trap 1: Never Too Late (R13) – An unraced August ’24 pup. The racing office hasn’t been overly impressed with her trial times, making her very hard to confidently back on her competitive debut.
