The Ultimate Laying Greyhounds Guide: 2026 Strategy

Updated: January 2026

As we kick off 2026, it is time to update my definitive Laying Greyhounds Guide. If you are looking for a consistent, long-term betting strategy rather than a “get rich quick” scheme, you are in the right place.

Many bettors are put off by laying greyhounds because of the liability—the amount you have to risk to win what seems like a small return. It can be daunting, especially when stakes increase during a recovery phase following a loss. However, the key to success in 2026 is shifting your mindset to view this as a long-term investment.

Why Laying Greyhounds Works

The proof is in the consistency. At the time of writing, I have just completed December 2025 with zero losing days.

  • My Results: Averaging £30 profit per day.

    • The Math: 31 days x £30 = £930 profit for the month.

  • Member Results: Some members target higher stakes.

    • The Math: 31 days x £50 = £1,550 profit for the month.

It might seem complicated at first, but I have simplified the process below using our specific greyhound lay bet tips and automation software.

Part 1: Initial Requirements

Before you begin, ensure you have the following three accounts set up:

  1. Membership: [Sign up here] to access our daily greyhound tips and specific lay bet selections.

  2. Automation Software: Go to BetBotPro (BBP) and sign up for their 7-day free trial.

  3. Exchange Account: Ensure you have an active Betfair account.

Part 2: Getting Your Selections

We have made finding the right dogs to lay incredibly simple.

  1. Navigate: Go to the “Lay Bets” page on our site (or the Lay Bets Tips home page).

  2. Identify: Look for the greyhound selections highlighted with a “Yellow” background. These are your targets.

  3. Download:

    • Locate the button: “Lay Bet Tips – Download In Any Format”.

    • Download the file as CSV or Excel.

    • Tip: I prefer using Google Sheets, but Microsoft Excel works perfectly too.

  4. Prepare the File:

    • Copy the names of all greyhounds under the column named “runner”.

    • Open a blank Google Sheet/Excel page.

    • Paste these names into the new page.

    • Save As: Comma-separated values (.csv).

    • Naming Convention: I recommend including the date, e.g., laybet-selection-01-01-26.

Part 3: BetBotPro (BBP) Settings

This is the most critical part of the guide. For the strategy to work, your bot needs to be configured correctly. Open BetBotPro and apply the following settings:

General Settings

  • Time to Bet: 60 seconds before the start of the race.

  • Odds Range: Minimum 1.01 | Maximum 12.0.

  • Max Back/Lay Ratio: £300 (Adjust based on your bankroll).

  • Max Stake Liability: £400 (This acts as a safety buffer).

  • Bets Per Race: Set Min and Max to 1.

    • Note: If there are multiple selections, BBP will automatically choose the greyhound with the lowest odds to minimize liability.

Safety & Profit Targets

  • Stop Loss: £150. (The amount you are prepared to lose in a worst-case scenario).

  • Target Profit: £30. (The bot stops once this daily target is hit).

  • Unsettled Bets Allowed: Set to 3.

    • Why? Greyhound races often overlap. This ensures the bot keeps working even if the previous race result hasn’t settled yet.

Staking Plan (Recovery Mode)

Go to the Staking Plan tab and select Recovery Stake.

  • Initial Stake: £4 (or your preferred starting unit).

  • Recovery %: 33.33% (3 Cycles).

    • How it works: If a lay bet loses, we recover the loss over the next 3 winning bets rather than risking it all on one.

    • Example: You lose £36. Your base stake is £4. The recovery adds a third of the loss (£12) to your base stake. Your next bet is £16.

  • Selection Options: Under the ‘Selections’ tab, ensure you choose Manual Selection.

Crucial Step: Always click the Reset tab in BBP after every race day. This resets your profit/loss counter to zero for the fresh session.

Part 4: Loading and Launching

Once your settings are configured, you are ready to automate.

  1. Import: In BBP, click Tools (top left) > Import selection from CSV.

  2. Select: Choose the .csv file you created in Part 2.

  3. Wait: The selections will load automatically (allow up to 60 seconds).

  4. Launch: Click the Start button.

  5. Maintain: Ensure your PC remains on and connected to the internet while BBP is running.

How BBP Selects Your Lay Bet

If you are using software to place your bets, such as BetBotPro (BBP), it is designed to minimize your liability automatically. It will always select the greyhound with the shortest odds as the lay bet for us.

For example, if we have three possible lay bets in a race:

  • Trap 1 - Captainannie Betfair Odds: 5.5
  • Trap 2 - Home Colleen Betfair Odds: 5.0 (Lowest)
  • Trap 3 - Wet Morning Betfair Odds: 6.5

In this scenario, BBP will automatically select Trap 2 - Home Colleen because 5.0 represents the lowest liability.

A Consistent Greyhound Lay System

Our goal is simple: a consistent, profitable betting strategy. We are using a tried and tested lay system designed for longevity.

It is important to be realistic—there will be losing days. However, the objective is for the winning days to significantly outweigh the losing ones over the long term.

The Trade-Off: When laying greyhounds (betting on them to lose), the liability stakes are higher than when betting to win. However, the trade-off is in your favor: it is statistically much easier to find a loser in a six-dog race than it is to pick the single winner.

Setting Your Daily Target

Discipline is the backbone of this strategy. You must set a daily profit target, and once that target is met, you must stop wagering for the day.

  • My Personal Target: £30 profit per day.

  • The Math: To hit this, I usually need about 8 successful lay bets.

Please remember that betting exchanges (like Betfair) charge a commission on winnings.

  • A £4.00 win usually results in £3.80 profit after commission.

  • 8 wins x £3.80 = £30.40 (Target Hit).

Bankroll Management

To operate this system, you need a dedicated “betting bank.”

  1. The Seed Amount: You need a funded account to cover your liability. For this guide, let’s assume you start with £300.

  2. The Golden Rule: This £300 is your working capital. You must leave this amount in the account at all times.

  3. Withdrawing Profits: Only withdraw the money above your seed amount.

    • Example: If your account grows to £780, you leave your initial £300 in and withdraw the £480 profit.

Step-by-Step Video Tutorial

Watch the video below to see exactly how to import our daily Greyhound Lay Bet Tips into BetBotPro (BBP). This is the exact automation software I use daily to execute this strategy efficiently.

Understanding Race Grades & Volatility

Over my years of laying greyhounds, I have identified a key pattern regarding race grades: Higher odds winners (upsets) are far more common in the lower classes of racing.

When the quality of the greyhound is lower, the race results tend to be more unpredictable. In my experience, you are more likely to see long-shot winners in the following grades:

  • Grade A7 and above (A8, A9, etc.)

  • Grade D5 and above

  • Grade S4 and above

In contrast, Open Races and Handicap Races generally feature higher-quality, professional dogs. These races tend to be more consistent, meaning the dogs run closer to their expected form.

The Data Behind Our Strategy

Our Lay Betting strategy is built on data aggregation. We rely on a consensus of tips from the industry's most respected sources to ensure high-confidence selections.

Our Primary Data Sources:

Why we built SoftwareGen

We developed SoftwareGen to replace external "Sporting Life" tips, which were historically underperforming. Our custom-built program analyzes extensive race statistics and selects greyhound tips according to our own strict, data-driven criteria.

Refining Your Strategy: Manual Selection

So far, this guide has demonstrated the "set and forget" method: downloading the .csv file and loading it directly into BBP. This is the simplest way to execute our Greyhound lay bets strategy.

You have full control to be selective.

While I prefer to load the file and let the software run automatically, you are not forced to accept every single selection. You can open the Bet Schedule within BBP and manually uncheck specific Greyhound lay bets if they don't meet your personal preference.

Common filters used by our members include:

  • Skipping Grade A11 races (lowest grade).
  • Removing dogs running in Handicap races.

Ultimately, the software is your tool—tailor it to suit your risk appetite.

Strategy: Staking and Automation

I use the staking plan *Recovery Stake* within BBP (BetBotPro). My personal setup is configured to recover any losses over 3 races (33.3% per race).

As shown in the image, following a losing bet, the software automatically increases the stake amount for the next wager. This ensures that your bankroll recovers efficiently. Crucially, the system immediately reverts to your normal staking limits once the deficit has been fully recovered.

Intelligent Selection When there are multiple possible lay bets for a single race, BBP is smart enough to minimize your risk. As long as you have set the “Maximum Bets” to 1 in your settings, the software will automatically identify and select the greyhound with the lowest odds.

Daily Discipline The software will continue running and laying greyhounds throughout the day until your specific profit target is hit. Once that target is reached, the bot stops to protect your winnings.

Pro Tip: After your daily profit target has been met, always click the Reset button. This zeros out your profit/loss counter, ensuring you are fresh and ready for the next day’s trading.

Setting Your Limits: Risk vs. Reward

⚠ The Stop Loss

You must have a hard limit on how much you are prepared to lose if a session goes wrong.

My Setting: £150

(Others set this between £200 - £300, but this must be an amount you are comfortable risking.)

🎯 The Profit Target

Equally important is knowing when to stop winning. Set a daily goal and stick to it.

My Setting: £30 per day

(This is flexible: I know members who use £2 stakes to target just £10 profit per day.)

⚠️ Important: Navigating Betfair Limits & Account Suspensions

As we move through 2026, it is vital to address the “elephant in the room”: Account restrictions. While Betting Exchanges (like Betfair) differ from traditional Sportsbooks—in that they generally want you to win because they take a commission—issues can still arise.

Some of my members have experienced account suspensions or temporary limits. Here is what you need to know and how to handle it.

1. The “Affordability Check” (Source of Wealth)

The most common issue right now isn’t being banned for winning, but being suspended for verification. UK gambling regulations have become stricter regarding “Source of Wealth.”

  • The Trigger: If you suddenly start depositing large amounts or your turnover (total stakes) increases rapidly due to a recovery staking plan, Betfair’s automated systems may flag your account.

  • The Result: Your account may be temporarily suspended while they ask for bank statements or proof of income.

  • The Solution: Do not panic. This is a regulatory requirement, not a punishment. Have your documents ready and cooperate quickly to get the limit lifted.

2. Premium Charges

For the very top tier of successful layers, Betfair applies a “Premium Charge.” This generally only applies if you have made a significant lifetime profit (typically over £250k) and bet in a specific way.

  • Note: For most users following a £30-£50 daily target, this will rarely be an immediate concern, but it is something to be aware of as you scale up.

3. “Gubbing” (Sportsbook vs. Exchange)

Remember, we are using the Exchange, not the Sportsbook.

  • Sportsbook: If you bet on fixed odds and win too much, they will limit your stakes (e.g., max bet £1.00).

  • Exchange: They generally do not limit your stakes; your only limit is the liquidity (money available) in the market. This makes the Exchange much safer for long-term strategies than standard bookmakers.

! Pro Tip: Have a Backup Exchange

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. While Betfair is the market leader with the best liquidity, technical outages or verification checks can happen.

I recommend opening a secondary account.

Consider having a funded account with Betdaq, Smarkets, or Matchbook. If Betfair goes down or suspends you for a check, you can switch your bot immediately and not miss a profitable day.

Summary: Your 5-Step Action Plan

If you take nothing else away from this guide, remember these five rules for 2026:

  1. Automate to Dominate: Don’t bet with emotion. Use BetBotPro to execute the strategy coldly and consistently.

  2. Protect Your Bank: Always keep your seed money (e.g., £300) in the exchange. Only withdraw your profits.

  3. Trust the Math: Laying offers a statistical advantage. Even when a loss occurs, the Recovery Staking Plan is designed to claw it back safely.

  4. Know When to Stop: Hit your daily target (e.g., £30), turn off the software, and enjoy your day. Greed is the enemy.

  5. Quality Data: Your bot is only as good as the instructions you give it. High-quality lay tips are essential.
